Jinkx Monsoon to play a character in Ben Foster's "Chicago"

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ winner Jinkx Monsoon to make their Broadway debut in ‘Chicago’… to be directed by ‘BETTIE LIVERY BOY’ Oscar winner Ben Foster!

RuPaul’s Drag Race season four winner Jinkx Monsoon has signed on to play a role in Ben Foster’s musical Chicago, the team behind the Broadway hit.

We’re told by one insider close to the production that Monsoon will play a character in the upcoming musical, and that she will then be cast as a member of the main cast in the upcoming Broadway run. The insider tells Deadline:

Ben’s vision for a new version of ‘Chicago’ is that it is not an anthology musical, but tells “the story” with many characters. And now Jinkx is part of this vision.

The musical runs February 27, 2020-March 12, 2021 at the St. James Theatre in NYC.

The new version of Chicago will be directed by Oscar winner Ben Foster, who will also be directing the upcoming film adaptation starring Michael B. Jordan and Regina King set for a June 2020 release. The book will be by Jonathan Larson.

It’s not clear how Monsoon will be playing into the musical’s vision of a “new” Chicago.

“Jinkx has never been seen on Broadway,” said the insider. “So to put her in a musical that has never been on Broadway, is an amazing opportunity. And to take the story of the character she will be playing, and to bring her to life in a way that she has never been in the theatre, is an incredible opportunity.

“She will be a major casting for this production. She will be the star of this musical.”

Monsoon’s win over fellow contender Imelda Marcos in last year’s season four was the talk of the season, and the show’s producers are hoping that the show’s ratings will continue to grow in a year’s time.

According to the insider, Monsoon’s casting in Chicago is part of a long list of high-profile Broadway performers who will be making their Broadway debuts alongside her.
